Apple Pie

Apple pie is a classic American dessert loved for its sweet, spiced apple filling and flaky pastry crust. Here's a basic recipe to make a delicious homemade apple pie:

Ingredients:

For the Crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 6-8 tablespoons ice water

For the Filling:

  • 6-7 cups of peeled, cored, and sliced apples (such as Granny Smith or a combination of varieties)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

For Assembly:

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk or water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Pie Crust:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
    • Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your hands to work the butter into the flour until you have coarse crumbs.
    • Gradually add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough just comes together.
    • Divide the dough into two equal parts, shape them into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  2. Prepare the Filling:

    • In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning.
    • In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour.
    • Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the apples and toss to coat them evenly.
  3. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).

  4. Roll Out the Crust:

    • Roll out one of the chilled pie crust discs on a floured surface to fit the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish. Place it in the dish.
  5. Add the Filling:

    • Pour the apple filling into the pie crust.
  6. Top with the Second Crust:

    • Roll out the second pie crust disc and place it over the filling. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
  7. Vent the Pie:

    • Cut small slits or create decorative patterns in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  8. Brush with Egg Wash:

    • In a small bowl, whisk the egg with milk or water. Brush the top crust with the egg wash for a golden finish.
  9. Bake:

    • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  10. Cool:

  • Allow the pie to cool for a few hours before serving. It's delicious on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
