Apple Pie
Apple pie is a classic American dessert loved for its sweet, spiced apple filling and flaky pastry crust. Here's a basic recipe to make a delicious homemade apple pie:
Ingredients:
For the Crust:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 6-8 tablespoons ice water
For the Filling:
- 6-7 cups of peeled, cored, and sliced apples (such as Granny Smith or a combination of varieties)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
For Assembly:
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon milk or water
Instructions:
Prepare the Pie Crust:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your hands to work the butter into the flour until you have coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough just comes together.
- Divide the dough into two equal parts, shape them into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Prepare the Filling:
- In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour.
- Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the apples and toss to coat them evenly.
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
Roll Out the Crust:
- Roll out one of the chilled pie crust discs on a floured surface to fit the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish. Place it in the dish.
Add the Filling:
- Pour the apple filling into the pie crust.
Top with the Second Crust:
- Roll out the second pie crust disc and place it over the filling. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
Vent the Pie:
- Cut small slits or create decorative patterns in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
Brush with Egg Wash:
- In a small bowl, whisk the egg with milk or water. Brush the top crust with the egg wash for a golden finish.

Cool:
