 Classic Swedish Meatballs

Ingredients:

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Butter or oil for frying

For the gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let it sit for a few minutes until the breadcrumbs absorb the milk.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, soaked breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix until well combined.

  3. Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.

  4. Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and brown on all sides until cooked through. This may take about 8-10 minutes.

  5. Once the meatballs are cooked, remove them from the skillet and set aside.

  6. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste.

  7. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, making sure there are no lumps. Simmer until the sauce thickens.

  8. Stir in the heavy cream and season with salt and pepper to taste.

  9. Add the meatballs back into the skillet, coating them with the gravy. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes until the meatballs are heated through.
