Tombstone Toppers
Ingredients and Materials:
- Fondant in gray or a color of your choice
- Rolling pin
- Tombstone-shaped cookie cutter or a template to cut shapes
- Edible food coloring (black or a darker shade for writing)
- Edible markers or a thin brush for details
- Cornstarch or powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions:
Prepare Your Fondant:
- Knead the fondant until it's smooth and pliable.
- If it becomes too sticky, dust your hands and the work surface with cornstarch or powdered sugar.
Roll Out the Fondant:
- Roll out the fondant to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thickness.
Cut Tombstone Shapes:
- Use a tombstone-shaped cookie cutter or a template to cut out tombstone shapes from the rolled fondant.
Add Texture:
- Create texture on the tombstones using a toothpick, the back of a knife, or other tools to make cracks, lines, or other details for a weathered appearance.
Let Them Dry:
- Place the fondant tombstones on a flat surface to dry. This will help them hold their shape when standing on the cake. Allow them to dry for at least 24 hours.
Write Inscriptions:
- Once the tombstones are dry, use edible food coloring or edible markers to write spooky inscriptions on each tombstone. You can write phrases like "RIP," "Beware," or create funny and eerie epitaphs.
Insert Into the Cake:
- Carefully insert the tombstone toppers into the cake. You may need to use toothpicks or small skewers to help secure them in place.
Decorate the Cake Board:
- Consider adding more Halloween elements, such as crushed chocolate cookies for dirt or gummy worms, around the tombstones on the cake board.
