Dutch Apple Pie (Appeltaart)

 Dutch Apple Pie (Appeltaart)

Certainly! One popular cake from the Netherlands is "Appeltaart," which is a Dutch apple pie. Here's a simple recipe for you:

Dutch Apple Pie (Appeltaart):

Ingredients:

  • 3 large apples (e.g., Granny Smith or Jonagold), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1-2 tablespoons breadcrumbs (for the crust)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice to prevent browning. Set aside.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cold, diced butter. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, blend the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Add the beaten egg to the flour mixture and mix until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two portions, with one portion slightly larger than the other.

  5. Roll out the larger portion of the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness. Line a greased pie or tart pan with the rolled-out dough, making sure to cover the bottom and sides. Sprinkle breadcrumbs over the crust to absorb excess moisture from the apples.

  6. Arrange the sliced apples on top of the crust, and sprinkle cinnamon over the apples.

  7. Roll out the smaller portion of the dough and place it over the apples, sealing the edges with the bottom crust. You can create a lattice pattern or make a solid crust with slits for steam to escape.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

  9. Allow the apple pie to cool before serving. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Enjoy your Dutch Apple Pie!
