Gyros

What is a gyros? How to pronounce gyro? Are gyros Greek or Turkish? How do you say gyro in Arabic?

Ingredients:

For the Gyros Meat:

  • 1.5 lbs (700g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or lamb, beef)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Juice of 1 lemon

For the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 cucumber, grated and drained
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For Serving:

  • Pita bread
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced red onions
  • Lettuce

Instructions:

1. Gyros Meat:

  1. In a bowl, mix minced garlic, dried oregano, ground cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, olive oil, and lemon juice to create a marinade.

  2. Cut the chicken thighs into thin strips. Place the strips in the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours or overnight for better flavor.

  3. Preheat your grill or a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the marinated chicken strips until fully cooked and slightly charred on the edges.

2. Tzatziki Sauce:

  1. In a bowl, combine Greek yogurt, grated and drained cucumber, minced garlic, chopped fresh dill, extra virgin olive oil, salt, and black pepper.

  2. Mix well and refrigerate until ready to serve.

3. Assembling Gyros:

  1. Warm the pita bread.

  2. Place a generous amount of the cooked gyros meat on the pita.

  3. Add sliced tomatoes, sliced red onions, and lettuce.

  4. Drizzle with the prepared tzatziki sauce.

  5. Fold the pita over the fillings, creating a wrap
